This September marks an exciting first for schools and libraries around the world: the launch of the World Kid Lit Reading Challenge Award. Designed to celebrate creativity, global citizenship, and the joy of reading, the award invites children and young people to showcase their reading journeys through imaginative presentations and displays.
What’s It All About?
Running from 1 September to 10 October 2025, the award is open to schools worldwide where English is a main teaching language. Pupils are encouraged to take part in a reading challenge that explores stories from around the globe — especially books in translation.
There are three entry categories:
- Ages 0–6 (Younger)
- Ages 7–12 (Middle)
- Ages 13+ (Older)
Teachers or librarians can then submit their students’ creative responses for judging.
Why It Matters
The award isn’t just about ticking off a reading list. It’s about:
- Inspiring a love of global stories
- Encouraging reflection and creativity
- Promoting the value of reading in translation
- Highlighting the rich diversity of children’s literature across cultures and languages

- An introductory slideshow, licensed for free use and adaptation
- Reading ideas and bingo-style prompts tailored by age group
Plus, from September, UK schools can also book assemblies and workshops in partnership with the Stephen Spender Trust.
