SLG worked with the Open University to create a course for those new to school librarianship. The course is completely free, and comes with a statement of participation which you can add to your training record. You can use our book ‘Creating a School Library with Impact’ to accompany the course, which will add greater depth to your knowledge.
The Open University’s free course, An Introduction to School Librarianship, is designed to enhance the skills and confidence of school librarians, whether they are new to the field or experienced professionals looking to upskill. The course explores the role of school libraries in supporting literacy, research, and reading for pleasure. It also covers strategies for delivering effective library services, using resources critically, and meeting the needs of stakeholders. Participants can earn a digital badge and a Statement of Participation upon completion, which can serve as evidence of continuing professional development.
Here’s an overview of the sessions:
- A Librarian’s Role in the School: Understanding how the library supports the school’s strategies and stakeholders.
- Equality and Diversity in Your School: Promoting inclusivity and addressing diverse needs.
- The Best Use of Technology: Leveraging technology to enhance library services.
