The CILIP School Librarians Group Committee members have developed a wide range of high-quality resources and carefully curated school library booklists to support the work of school librarians. These materials are designed to offer practical guidance, professional inspiration, and recommendations that reflect the diverse needs of school communities. Drawing on their expertise and experience, the committee members aim to equip school librarians with tools that enhance their practice, strengthen library provision, and foster a culture of reading for pleasure and learning. The booklists are readily accessible through the Padlet below. We will have a range of free and CILIP member-only resources available later this year.
Booklists
These reading lists, along with the suggested age ranges and school bands, are intended as guidelines rather than fixed rules. They have been compiled with reference to average reading levels, the subject matter and complexity of each book, and recommendations from publishers and other authoritative sources. However, every student is different: reading ability and emotional maturity can vary widely, and there are often overlaps between key stages (for example, between upper Key Stage 2 and lower Key Stage 3, or between Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5). For this reason, the lists should be used as a starting point only. Librarians and educators are encouraged to apply their professional knowledge of their school community when deciding which titles are most appropriate, and to consider the individual needs, interests, and readiness of their students.
