This webinar is now fully booked. If you missed out on registering, a recording will be available on the CILIP SLG website by Friday, 20th February, for a limited time only.

If you’re a school librarian looking ahead to the National Year of Reading (NYR) and feeling a sense of pressure, you’re not alone. Big national initiatives can sometimes sound as though they demand big changes, new programmes, or extra layers of work.
The reassuring message behind this upcoming webinar is simple: you’re already doing it.
A different way of looking at the NYR
The National Year of Reading is not asking school librarians to reinvent their role or launch a raft of new initiatives. Instead, it recognises the reading-for-pleasure work that has been at the heart of school libraries for years.
This session, led by Barbara Band, starts from what you already do day to day. Rather than adding more to your workload, it focuses on helping you frame existing practice more clearly and strategically within the NYR context.
From everyday practice to visible impact
During the webinar, delegates will explore how familiar library activities can:
- Fit logically within the National Year of Reading framework
- Be rebadged or made more visible across the school
- Be extended in small, manageable ways that feel realistic
The emphasis is on clarity rather than complexity. The NYR provides useful language, structure and permission to talk confidently about reading for pleasure, strengthen relationships with colleagues, and evidence impact — without relying on complex data or additional administration.
Supporting a whole-school reading culture
Moving from everyday library practice to a whole-school reading culture can feel daunting. This webinar supports delegates to decide what is realistic within their own setting, acknowledging that every school context is different.
Rather than leaving with a long to-do list, participants will come away with:
- Greater clarity about the purpose of the NYR
- Increased confidence in articulating their role and impact
- A small number of achievable next steps that make sense locally
